There’s a cultural shift taking place at the South Carolina Statehouse, and it’s being led by one of its newest members: S.C. Rep. Hamilton R. Grant.
The most remarkable thing about this shift is that it feels natural. Effortless. Whether it’s his choice of location for casual conversations, his personal style or his decision to use his power to officially proclaim May 6 as “Boots on the Ground Day” in honor of Midlands artist 803Fresh, Grant is bringing a fresh energy and verve to an institution that has often felt stale and bitter — and one that sometimes seems more determined to dictate state culture and our lives than to engage with them.
Grant is a proud Democrat in a legislative body that is overwhelmingly Republican. Yet his approach to leadership — and his courage to do things his own way — is having an impact on his own party and could point towards a path for Democrats to gain better footing in South Carolina.

Democratic Rep. Hamilton Grant represents northeast Columbia at the S.C. Statehouse.
