Congress officially certified President-elect Donald Trump as the winner of the 2024 election on Monday afternoon, marking the final step in the formal process of confirming the Electoral College results. Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the count, which included the formality of finalizing her own defeat as each state's votes were tallied.
While the certification of the Electoral College is generally seen as a routine and ceremonial process, excluding Jan. 6, 2021, it nonetheless prompted notable reactions from local politicians.
In the Midlands, local representatives responded with a mix of reactions, some more supportive, some more skeptical. Here’s a closer look at how politicians from the region reacted to Congress’s certification of the 2024 election results.
Democrats
"January 6, 2021 will always be remembered as a day of dishonor and disgrace. Protecting the integrity of our democracy is paramount. Today Congress will do its constitutional duty once again to certify the election results - a great contrast from Republicans who sought to deny the election four years ago," U.S Rep. James Clyburn tweeted.
"Pretending that January 6, 2021 didn't happen is un-American," S.C. House Dist. 79 Rep. Hamilton Grant said.
"Happy Eugene Goodman Appreciation Day!" S.C. Sen. Tameika Isaac Devine tweeted. Eugene Goodman was Capitol Police officer who gained widespread recognition for his actions during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
"Four years ago, Donald Trump launched an assault on our democracy and nearly drove it to ruin. But let's make it clear: The fight is not over. Democrats will continue to defend South Carolina's constitutional freedoms against Trump and his Project 2025 allies' repeated attacks," the South Carolina Democratic Party tweeted.
Republicans
"It was my honor to certify the election results today and confirm Donald Trump as the next president, elected in a landslide. Let's Make America Great Again!" U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson tweeted.
"It's official. The election results of 2024 were certified today in the House of Representatives, presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris. Donald Trump won, (and it's) the biggest political comeback in American history. I am glad of the part I played in it, and I think he is going to be a great president. Let's hit the ground running, secure that border, cut our taxes, and get the world back to better shape," U.S Sen. Lindsey Graham said. "It was great to be a part of history seeing the votes counted... The only problem I saw was they skipped Canada; we'll fix that next time." Graham was seemingly making a play on Trump's infamous joke about Canada becoming the 51st state.
"Today is a GREAT DAY for America!!! Today we will certify the election of President Trump," U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman tweeted prior to the vote.
"Congratulations to President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect Vance! I look forward to working with them to restore safety and prosperity for the American people," U.S. Sen. Tim Scott tweeted.
"Congratulations to our incoming President Donald J. Trump and Vice President JD Vance on the official certification of the 2024 election. The inauguration can't come soon enough - America is more than ready for a Trump White House," Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette tweeted.
