The state of South Carolina can once again lay claim to a top football team. The South Carolina State University Bulldogs won the 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl last week, becoming HBCU national champions.
The Bulldogs’ historic comeback victory set off celebrations across the state and sparked the idea for a first-ever recognition for the university.
In a post shared on his Grant for SC Facebook page, State Representative Hamilton Grant (House District 79), along with representatives Jerry Govan (House District 93) and State Senator Deon Tedder (Senate District 42) requested that Gov. Henry McMaster fly a South Carolina State University flag over the State House in recognition of the victory.
Grant then shared exciting news on Tuesday morning.“ We are pleased to announce that Governor McMaster has honored our request! For the first time in our state’s history, an HBCU flag will fly high above our Capitol. Congratulations again to the 2025 National HBCU Champions!”
The flag will fly on Jan. 19. That also marks the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in South Carolina.
Following the MLK Day holiday, the flag will be formally presented to the South Carolina State University football team during a celebratory parade in Orangeburg.
This continues a tradition that other schools like Clemson, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina have experienced following their championship victories.
