South Carolina Republicans rewrote anti-DEI legislation at last-minute. Its impact is unclear.

COLUMBIA — Statehouse Republicans abruptly re-wrote their anti-DEI bill April 2 and instead reverted to a similar take on the original version that would cut government contracts and business to any entity that has policies bolstering diversity, equity and inclusion.

Critics said the move, if it lasts, will have a devastating impact on the state's economy.

The anti-DEI debate resumed in the House of Representatives on April 2 a week after successful delay tactics by the Democratic-led Legislative Black Caucus were able to slow the process down on what many saw a weaker DEI bill.
